From above, Piedmont looks like a soft, checkered quilt draped elegantly over the Alpine arc, whose undulating reliefs form gentle, striated slopes. As we gradually zoom in, we realize that each of the checkered squares is a vineyard and the striations are rows. Each row is made up of vines, leaves, shoots, and bunches of grapes, which in turn are made up of grapes—pearls of a treasure that will one day become Piedmontese wines.
Piedmont is the treasure chest that holds these gems.
Rightfully considered one of Italy’s most prolific wine regions, it is certainly the most significant in terms of volume, given that—between red and white wines—it boasts 42 DOC and 16 DOCG designations, a testament to Italy’s expertise in the wine sector. Just consider the recent creation of the “Royal Road of Turin Wines,” a 600-kilometer route through the region surrounding the capital that winds through much of Canavese, Collina Torinese, Pinerolo, and Val di Susa. Spumante also originated in Piedmont, the most famous of which (and not only in Italy) is undoubtedly that of Asti.
