The Bordeaux region is the area that, more than any other, has made French wines famous around the world. This success has been achieved thanks to centuries of tradition and a commitment to quality. Bordeaux’s fame stems mainly from its red wines—which account for 80% of production—with their imposing structure and power, but also from its mold-affected or botrytized wines. The famous and expensive Bordeaux wines actually make up only a small percentage of total production, while most of the wines produced in the region (700 million bottles per year) are simply good wines and often very affordable.
Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot are the three main grape varieties used to produce Bordeaux red wines. This blend, known as the “Bordeaux Blend,” is now found in many wines produced around the world.
