Marchesi di Barolo’s Barbaresco Monte Stefano is a great, long-aged Nebbiolo from the renowned Montestefano cru. After more than thirty years of aging, it displays an intense garnet color with orange highlights. The aroma is broad, complex, and elegant, with notes of wilted rose, dried violet, cherries preserved in alcohol, dried plum, tobacco, leather, licorice, sweet spices, undergrowth, dried mushrooms, and balsamic nuances. On the palate, it is harmonious, deep, and refined, supported by fresh acidity and now perfectly integrated tannins that accompany a long, persistent finish with hints of ripe fruit, spices, and tertiary notes typical of great mature Nebbiolos. The 1991 vintage produced wines of remarkable balance and elegance, characteristics that today make this Barbaresco particularly fascinating and representative of the Barbaresco region. It pairs magnificently with braised beef, game birds and game meat, hare in salmì, roe deer, truffle-topped fillet, substantial roasts, braised veal cheek, porcini mushroom risotto, tajarin with white truffle, and aged cheeses such as Castelmagno and very mature Parmigiano Reggiano. Recommended serving temperature: 18–20 °C, preferably after adequate aeration in a decanter.
