Marchesi di Barolo’s Barbaresco Monte Stefano is a great, long-aged Nebbiolo from the famous Montestefano cru. After more than thirty years of aging, it displays an intense garnet color with orange highlights. The aroma is broad, complex, and elegant, with notes of wilted rose, dried violet, cherries preserved in alcohol, dried plum, tobacco, leather, licorice, sweet spices, underbrush, dried mushrooms, and balsamic nuances. On the palate, it is harmonious, deep, and refined, supported by fresh acidity and now perfectly integrated tannins that lead to a long, persistent finish with hints of ripe fruit, spices, and the tertiary notes typical of great, mature Nebbiolos. The 1991 vintage produced wines of remarkable balance and elegance—qualities that today make this Barbaresco particularly captivating and representative of the Barbaresco region. It pairs magnificently with braised beef, game birds and game animals, hare in salmì, roe deer, truffle-infused fillet, substantial roasts, braised veal cheek, porcini mushroom risotto, tajarin with white truffle, and aged cheeses such as Castelmagno and very well-aged Parmigiano Reggiano. Recommended serving temperature: 18–20 °C, preferably after adequate aeration in a decanter.
