Domaine Faiveley’s 1970 Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru is a rare historical testament to one of the most austere and refined terroirs of the Côte de Nuits, hailing from a vintage that was generous and well-structured in Burgundy. This Grand Cru, located right next to Chambertin, is known for producing wines that are more subtle and mineral-driven than its more muscular neighbor, and Faiveley’s 1970s vintage reflects the traditional, solid style that has made the Domaine famous. After more than fifty years, the wine presents a pale garnet color with orange highlights, offering an evolved and aristocratic nose dominated by notes of humus, dry leaves, cigar box, old leather, and a subtle hint of red fruit jam. On the palate, the originally firm structure has transformed into an ethereal and delicate texture, where the tannins are now a silky memory and the finish is carried by a mineral savory note that remains present. Although 1970 is not considered a vintage suited for very long aging like 1971 or 1978, storage in the Faiveley cellars has allowed many of these bottles to reach the present day with rare dignity and charm. It must be handled with extreme care: it is recommended not to decant it to avoid a lethal oxidative shock, but to open and serve it directly at 17°C in large glasses, pairing it with dishes of delicate, autumnal flavor such as mushroom risotto or quail, to celebrate the culmination of a long evolutionary journey.
