All in all, after a difficult start, 2012 is a vintage to watch and, having tasted it today, we can confirm that this Dom is evolving beautifully in bottle after ten years. The growing season began with frosts in winter and spring, followed by heavy rains, terrifying hailstorms and cold spells during flowering. Then, an intensely hot summer seemed extreme, but what saved the vintage was a warm and dry autumn, with harvest from September 10th to 26th.
Today, this wine shows great potential as it emerges after a decade. Typically fresh but enveloping, the bouquet is a mix of stony minerals, chalk and white flowers. The palate is broad and full, with notes of ripe apricot, hints of rhubarb and dried herbs, and that chalky minerality again on the finish. Long, seductive and full of flavour, this is a wine to sip and savour for as long as possible. There is an increasing talk of energy in wines in Champagne, and this one has it in spades. It is the perfect bottle for celebrating or stargazing. (Anthony Gismondi)
