The majority of Bordeaux wines (nearly 90 percent of total production) are the dry, medium-bodied red Bordeaux blends that have established the region’s reputation.
The best (and most expensive) of these are the wines from the grand châteaux of the Haut-Médoc and the Saint-Émilion and Pomerol appellations on the right bank. The former focuses (at the highest level) on Cabernet Sauvignon, the latter on Merlot.
The region takes its name (which roughly means “by the water”) from the port city of Bordeaux, which serves as a logistics and administrative hub. A key reason why most Bordeaux red wines are made from a blend of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon is that these two varieties bud, bloom, and ripen at different times and at different rates, thereby reducing the risk posed by adverse weather conditions during flowering or harvest.
