Whiskey and Spirits

Whiskey is a spirit produced by fermenting and then distilling various grains, which is then aged in wooden barrels. Some grains, often barley, are germinated and converted into malt. The world’s finest whiskeys are considered to be Scottish, American, Irish, and, in recent years, Japanese as well.

Whiskey is the quintessential spirit for contemplation, a treat to round off the day that should definitely be savored without rushing.

It can be served on its own or with Podolico cheese as an appetizer, or with aged Pecorino for a “bolder” spirit, or with goat’s-milk Toma for a more delicate flavor.

A classic pairing is with high-quality dark chocolate.

Of course, you can pair whiskey with fine cigars or excellent pipe tobacco. Some English blends—not overly aromatic but full-bodied—evoke powerful emotions and make for a truly satisfying finale.
