Im 16. Jahrhundert ließ der Ritter von Essenault, Berater des Parlaments von Bordeaux, das alte Gebäude abreißen, um die heutige Struktur zu errichten, der er seinen abgekürzten Name gab: Issan. Zwei Jahrhunderte später wurde das Weingut 1855 als Troisième Grand Cru von Margaux klassifiziert. Im Jahr 1945 erwarb die Familie Cruse das Anwesen. Seit 1998 wird das Anwesen von Emmanuel Cruse verwaltet, der zusammen mit Jacky Lorenzetti Miteigentümer ist. In January 2008, the Cruse won the title Grand Maître de la Commanderie du Bontemps des Médoc, der Graves, von Sauternes und von Barsac ausgezeichnet. The Château d'Issan besitzt einen Weinberg auf einer einzigen Fläche am Ufer der Gironde, dessen Boden aus wunderschönen, kiesreichen Graves besteht. The Rebsortenportfolio besteht, as in the rest of the Appellation, zu 65% aus Cabernet-Sauvignon und zu 35% aus Merlot. The Reben werden with nachhaltigen Weinbaumethoden behandelt: Behandlungen werden je nach Schwere der Krankheit durchgeführt und es wird viel Prophylaxe betrieben (im Allgemeinen zwischen 7 und 9 Behandlungen per Jahr).
