Elegance, finesse, and sophistication are the words that come to mind when describing this wine, which is produced at a vineyard in eastern Pomerol, near Saint-Émilion. The vineyard at Château la Conseillante is one of the oldest on the Pomerol plateau and owes its name to Catherine Conseillan, the owner of the château in the 18th century. It has belonged to the Nicolas family since 1871, who have passed down the tradition from generation to generation and maintained the wine’s exceptionally high quality.
The 12-hectare vineyard is divided into two sections with completely different characteristics, which are perfectly suited to the two grape varieties used for wine production: In the north, where the Merlot vines are planted, the gray clay soil lies over a subsoil of red clay, indicating a high iron content—a hallmark of the Petrus terroir. For the vineyards in the southern part of the estate, near the Saint-Émilion appellation, the subsoil is sandy and gravelly, particularly well-suited for Cabernet Franc—a grape variety that expresses itself best at the nearby Cheval Blanc. The cultivation of each individual parcel is carefully managed at every stage of the winemaking process under the supervision of the talented Jean-Michel Laporte. The wines are then aged in barriques for nearly two years, with an annual renewal rate of 60% to 100%, depending on the vintage.
