Die Appellation Pessac-Léognan erstreckt sich entlang des linken Ufers der Garonne, direkt unterhalb von Bordeaux (einige Weinberge liegen bereits im Gemeindegebiet). Sie zeichnet sich durch Schwemmlandböden aus Kiess (Graves) und ein gemäßigtes ozeanisches Klima mit hoher Luftfeuchtigkeit und das ganze Jahr über relativ milden Temperaturen aus.
Genau wie im Haut-Médoc, das ähnliche Böden aufweist, ist die Hauptrebsorte Cabernet Sauvignon, die oft mit Merlot oder, in geringeren Mengen, mit anderen Rebsorten wie Petit Verdot, Malbec und Carménère verschnitten wird. Pessac-Léognan-Weine sind leichter und aromatischer als ihre Nachbarn aus dem Haut-Médoc, mit einer aromatischen Palette, in der schwarze und rote Beerenfrüchte (schwarze Johannisbeere, Sauerkirsche, Pflaume und Brombeere) hervorstechen, begleitet von den typischen kräuterigen Noten.
In den besten Jahrgängen ermöglicht die vollmundige und gut integrierte Tanninstruktur den Weinen, mehrere Jahrzehnte zu reifen, bevor sie ihr volles Potenzial erreichen.
