Der Tignanello is one of the great Rotweine of Marchesi Antinori, which in the 70's began after a long phase of the Weinbau-Experience. Die ursprüngliche Idea war es, durch Eingriffe in die Pflanzdichte und den Rebschnitt konzentriertere Trauben und weichere Tannine zu erhalten. Daraus entstand ein Sangiovese, der erstmals in Barriques ausgebaut und mit nicht-traditionellen Sorten wie Cabernet Sauvignon und Cabernet Franc verschnitten wurde. Als Vorläufer der large Tuscan Rotweine, der Supertuscans, die aus der Verbindung von autochthonen und internationalen Rebsorten entstanden sind, ist der Tignanello einer jener großen Weine, die Geschichte der italienischen Önologie geprägt und zur Legende geworden sind.
