The 2005 Volnay "Les Famines" from Domaine Henri & Gilles Buisson is a masterful expression of one of the most monumental and long-lived vintages in recent Burgundian history, combining exceptional fruit concentration with a deep tannic structure. Produced by a historic estate in Saint-Romain, a pioneer of organic and biodynamic viticulture, this wine comes from a plot at the foot of the Volnay hill, where the clay-limestone soils give the Pinot Noir dense flesh and a natural predisposition for aging. Twenty years after harvest, the wine still displays an intense garnet-red color and a powerful bouquet that weaves ripe notes of blackberry, black cherry, and violet with developed hints of black truffle, leather, oriental spices, and licorice. On the palate, the typical opulence of the 2005 vintage is supported by a still-vibrant backbone of acidity, with tannins that, though initially robust, have now softened into a velvety and refined texture. Vinified with minimal intervention to preserve the integrity of the terroir, this Volnay represents the perfect balance between structural power and silky elegance, offering a very long and spicy finish. It is recommended to serve it at 17°C, preferably after a brief aeration in large glasses, paired with structured dishes such as partridge with blueberries, meat braised in red wine, or well-aged French blue cheese.
