The 1964 Clemente Guasti Barolo is a historic wine from the Langhe region produced by one of La Morra’s traditional wineries, which has been in operation since the 20th century and is known for its classic Barolos made in a rather “traditional” style—that is, using winemaking techniques involving long maceration and aging in large oak barrels, designed to produce wines with great longevity and structure.

The 1964 vintage is generally considered one of the best of the decade for Barolo, producing wines that are more balanced than those of more inconsistent vintages; they thus originally possessed good substance and substantial tannins, yet also exhibited greater harmony than more rustic wines.

Today, more than 60 years later, this style of Barolo is only found when it has been well-preserved, and it tends to develop a highly evolved, tertiary profile characterized by a garnet-orange color and aromas of leather, tobacco, underbrush, earth, sweet spices, licorice, and dried red fruit, with a structure that is now delicate yet still complex in the best examples.

Bottles from Clemente Guasti’s early years may be of interest because they are not among the most commercially successful and are therefore often less common than those from other, better-known producers; at the same time, however, their current quality varies greatly and depends entirely on how they have been stored, as some bottles may still be vibrant and expressive, while others are already oxidized or in the final stages of aging.
