When the Aubert family purchased Château La Couspaude in 1963, everything needed to be rebuilt from scratch: there were no vineyards, no cellar, and the building was in a pitiful state. The only thing intact at this future Saint-Émilion Grand Cru was its magnificent and rare clay-limestone terroir. For 30 years, the Aubert family patiently restored the vineyard, surrounding themselves with the right people, such as the renowned winemaker and consultant Michel Rolland. This tremendous effort was rewarded in 1993 with the estate’s promotion to Grand Cru Classé status.

The vineyards, which are about 35 years old, cover 7 hectares; the grapes are harvested by hand and carefully selected. The blend consists of 75% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon.

The winemaking process is carried out in full accordance with Bordeaux tradition: the grapes undergo pre-fermentation maceration at a low temperature, and the wine is aged in new barriques for 18 to 22 months, depending on the vintage.

Château La Couspaude offers a remarkable aromatic palette ranging from black currant to black pepper, underpinned by delicate woody notes. On the palate, it reveals structured tannins and the body one would expect from a Saint-Émilion Grand Cru.
