Sparkling wine production plays a very important role in Italy. Today, sparkling wines are produced in every Italian region.
Let’s start with the Veneto Region : here, the most famous sparkling wines are those of Prosecco , an iconic wine. It is one of the best-known and most widely exported wines in the world, very fresh and perfect as an aperitif.
Asti DOCG , on the other hand , is produced in Piedmont , in the Alta Langa area. It is a sweet sparkling wine made using the Martinotti method. To enjoy it perfectly, a special glass was even created: the Coppa Asti.
Some of the best Italian sparkling wines are produced in Franciacorta , a hilly area in Lombardy that stretches between Brescia and Lake Iseo. To produce the exceptional Franciacorta wines, we start with Chardonnay, Pinot Nero, Erbamat, and Pinot Bianco grapes. According to strict production regulations, the only permitted method is the Metodo Franciacorta , a Classic Method. The Franciacorta region has undoubtedly made a fundamental contribution to the history of Italian sparkling wines worldwide.
We conclude by discussing one of the symbols of Italian winemaking: Trento DOC . This appellation is particularly significant because it was the first to be dedicated exclusively to sparkling wine produced through secondary fermentation in the bottle. We are in Trentino , where the history of classic method sparkling wine production is deeply rooted and dates back many centuries.
