Tuscany is undoubtedly one of Italy’s most important wine regions, thanks to its world-famous labels. A true jewel of the global wine world, it boasts an extraordinary variety of wines with distinct characteristics and a history stretching back a thousand years.
The typical Tuscan landscape alone speaks volumes about the region’s strong winemaking tradition: miles and miles of magnificent rows of vines stretching across the hills of Chianti and the Etruscan Coast, or nestled within the picture-perfect landscapes of the Val d’Orcia and Val di Chiana.
This includes eleven DOCG designations, forty-one DOC designations, and six IGT designations.
One cannot discuss Tuscan winemaking—or even winemaking worldwide—without thinking of Brunello di Montalcino, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, Chianti Classico, and the Super Tuscans produced in the Bolgheri region.
The undisputed cornerstone of the region's red wines is Sangiovese, found in nearly all DOCs. A red grape of exceptional quality and character, though not easy to grow, it yields very different results depending on the microclimate and soil in which it is cultivated.
