Alongside Ornellaia and Sassicaia, it one of the first Super Tuscans to be produced—a category of great wines made primarily from French grape varieties, but crafted in a manner very different from standardized production. This style, which emerged emerged in the late 1960s, marked the advent of a new generation of great Italian wines. In fact,, the history of Sassicaia wine is even morelonger ancient. Since the mid-the the 1940s, Marquis Mario Incisa della Rochetta, owner of Tenuta San Guido, decided to import French grape varieties (Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon) with vine cuttings originating from Château Lafite-Rothschild. Initially intended exclusively for the owner’s personal consumption, Sassicaia wine was first marketed by Antinori starting with the 1968 vintage and established itselfsoon as one of the finest Cabernet-based wines, capable of competing with the mostgreatest greatest Bordeaux wines. Spurred by this success, many other Tuscan producers began introducing numerous French grape varieties. Faced with this sudden competition, only rigor and winemaking expertise could make the difference—a challenge that the Incisa della Rochetta family had no troubleto to rise to, consistently maintaining their production at the pinnacle of quality.. In 1983, the Bolgheri appellation was classified as a DOC (Denominazione di Origine Controllata), granting the famous wine further—albeit unnecessary—prestige in the eyes of wine enthusiasts
