The Gruaud-Larose estate lies between Branaire-Ducru to the east and Lagrange to the west. Its extensive vineyard (82 hectares) is planted on medium-textured gravelly soil. In the 18th century, the estate, owned by the Gruaud brothers, covered as much as 115 hectares. The son-in-law of one of them, Monsieur de Larose, took the reins and became the tireless ambassador for this wine, which even made its way to the royal table, hence the famous phrase still found on the label: “the king of wines, the wine of kings.” A well-deserved recognition, as for many years the wines were considered the most powerful and long-lived of all Saint-Julien wines.  Gruaud Larose wines are among the finest produced in Saint-Julien. The vineyard has been fully certified organic since 2022, with a predominance of Cabernet Sauvignon (60%), complemented by Merlot (30%), Cabernet Franc (7%), and Petit Verdot (3%). The winemakers employ biodynamic practices, including the use of herbal infusions made from various plants as an alternative to pest control, as well as the application of trace elements at the base of the vines.
