From above, Piedmont looks like a soft, checkered quilt elegantly draped over the Alpine arc, whose covered peaks form gentle, striated slopes. As we gradually zoom in, we realize that each of the squares is a vineyard and the striations are rows of vines. Each row consists of vines, leaves, shoots, and clusters, which in turn are made up of grapes—pearls of a treasure that will one day become Piedmontese wines.

Rightly considered one of Italy’s richest wine-producing regions, it is undoubtedly the most important in terms of numbers, as it boasts 42 DOC and 16 DOCG wines—both red and white—a highlight of Italian winemaking. Just consider the recent establishment of the “Strada Reale dei vini torinesi” (Royal Route of Turin Wines), a 600-kilometer route through the capital’s surrounding areas that winds through much of the Canavese, the Turin Hills, the Pinerolo area, and the Susa Valley. Piedmont is also the birthplace of sparkling wine, the most famous of which (and not just in Italy) is undoubtedly Asti.
