Poderi Aldo Conterno's Barolo Bussia is a classic example of the winery's style in its most "territorial" interpretation, hailing from the Bussia area of Monforte d'Alba. It's a pure Nebbiolo made from a selection of parcels in the Bussia cru, not from a single specific vineyard like the Cicala, Colonnello, or Romirasco labels, but from a broader terroir.
The 1994 Barolo vintage is generally considered good but not legendary: balanced wines, less extreme than great vintages like 1990 or 1996, with a more classic and linear style. In this context, the 1994 Bussia today typically presents itself as having matured but still distinctly distinct, with an aromatic profile that leans toward dried roses, ripe cherries, licorice, tobacco, leather, and earthy and spicy notes. The fruitiness is now more subtle, while the tertiary nuances typical of mature Nebbiolo are more prominent.
On the palate, it's a generally medium-bodied Barolo, with a structure that's still robust but less imposing than the winery's more prestigious crus. The tannins are present but smoothed by age, and the typical Nebbiolo acidity helps maintain a certain tension and freshness even after many years. It doesn't have the vertical depth of Aldo Conterno's most iconic crus, but it maintains a restrained elegance and good, evolved drinkability.
At the table, it's a wine very consistent with Piedmontese tradition: it pairs well with braised meats, roast beef, stewed game such as hare or roe deer, tajarin with ragù, and agnolotti del plin with rich sauces. It also pairs well with aged cheeses and porcini mushroom dishes, where its earthy and spicy notes find a nice balance.
Overall, it is a more “classic and accessible” Barolo within the Aldo Conterno range, interesting today above all for its harmonious evolution and for the traditional interpretation of the Bussia territory in a regular vintage like 1994.
