Château des Rochers is a fairly typical example of the Right Bank of Bordeaux: a small, family-run estate located in the Lussac-Saint-Émilion area, one of the so-called “satellite” appellations of Saint-Émilion.
This is a vineyard of about 7 hectares situated on clay-limestone soils, which are particularly well-suited to Merlot—a variety that, in fact, clearly dominates the blend at about 90 percent, complemented by small percentages of Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. The vines are, on average, quite old (around 40 years), a factor that contributes to the wine’s concentration.
The estate is part of Vignobles Rousseau, a family of winemakers that has been active in the Libournais region for several generations. Today, it is led by Laurent and Stéphanie Rousseau—representing roughly the fifth generation—who, over time, have transformed a mixed farm (including livestock and grain) into an operation focused almost exclusively on viticulture since the 1980s, gradually expanding the vineyard area.
Overall, Château des Rochers is not a “renowned” château or one ranked among the great names of Saint-Émilion, but it is a good representative of the appellation’s group of serious, terroir-focused producers, capable of producing solid, balanced, and sometimes even age-worthy wines—especially in favorable vintages—with a generally attractive value for money and a style faithful to the soft, fruity character typical of Merlot-dominated Bordeaux wines.
