When the Aubert family purchased Château La Couspaude in 1963, everything was in need of renovation: the vineyards were missing, there was no cellar, and the building was in a pitiful state. The only thing intact about this future Grand Cru of Saint-Émilion was the magnificent and rare clay-limestone terroir. For 30 years, the Aubert family patiently renovated the vineyard, surrounding themselves with the right people, such as the renowned winemaker and consultant Michel Rolland. This hard work was rewarded in 1993 with promotion to Grand Cru Classé.
The vines, approximately 35 years old, extend over 7 hectares; the grapes are harvested by hand and carefully selected. The blend is 75% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon.
The winemaking process is carried out in full respect of Bordeaux tradition: the grapes undergo pre-fermentation maceration at low temperatures and the wine is left to mature in new barriques for 18 to 22 months depending on the vintage.
Château La Couspaude expresses a remarkable aromatic palette ranging from blackcurrant to black pepper, supported by delicate woody notes. On the palate, it reveals structured tannins and the consistency expected from a Saint-Émilion Grand Cru.
