Domaine Faiveley's 1970 Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru is a rare historical testimony to one of the most austere and refined terroirs in the Côte de Nuits, coming from a generous and well-structured vintage in Burgundy. This Grand Cru, located directly next to Chambertin, is known for producing more subtle and minerally wines than its more muscular neighbor, and Faiveley's 1970s version reflects the traditional, robust style that has made the domaine famous. After more than fifty years, the wine presents a pale garnet color with orange highlights, offering an evolved and aristocratic nose dominated by notes of humus, dried leaves, cigar box, old leather, and a subtle hint of jammy red fruits. On the palate, the originally firm structure has transformed into an ethereal and fragile texture, where the tannins are now a silky memory and the finish is entrusted to a still-present minerality. Although 1970 isn't considered a vintage for long aging like 1971 or 1978, its storage in the Faiveley cellars has allowed many of these bottles to reach the present day with a rare dignity and charm. It should be handled with extreme care: it's recommended not to decant it to avoid lethal oxidative shock, but to open it and serve it immediately at 17°C in large glasses, pairing it with delicate, autumnal dishes like mushroom risotto or quail, to celebrate the end of a long evolutionary journey.
