Solaia is one of the great “Super Tuscan” wines produced by the Antinori family at the Marchesi Antinori estate in the Chianti Classico region. It is a Bordeaux-style blend based on Cabernet Sauvignon, with Cabernet Franc and a small amount of Sangiovese depending on the vintage, vinified with the aim of combining international power with Tuscan identity.
The 2003 vintage in Tuscany was very hot and dry, resulting in rich, concentrated, and ripe wines with a style that is more opulent than elegant. In this context, the 2003 Solaia tends to express great density and ripe fruit, revealing notes of black cherry preserved in alcohol, ripe plum, and black fruit jam, along with more developed hints of cocoa, sweet tobacco, sweet spices, and a slight toasty sensation resulting from aging in wood.
On the palate, it is generally powerful and enveloping, with pronounced tannins that are often well-rounded by aging and a pronounced alcoholic structure that reflects the warm character of the vintage. Compared to more classic or fresh vintages, the 2003 is less vertical and less acidic, but softer, warmer, and more immediately rich.
At the table, this wine pairs well with very full-bodied dishes: it goes well with Florentine steak, hearty beef roasts, oven-roasted lamb with herbs, slow-braised meats, and game such as venison or wild boar. It also pairs very well with aged, flavorful cheeses, where its intensity and fruity sweetness find balance in the savory notes of the food.
Overall, this Solaia is more focused on power and maturity than on finesse—a characteristic typical of the great, hot vintages of the early 2000s—and today it is appreciated above all for its richness and mature smoothness.
