Poderi Aldo Conterno’s Barolo Bussia is a classic example of the winery’s style in its most “terroir-driven” interpretation, sourced from the Bussia area in Monforte d’Alba. It is a 100% Nebbiolo made from a selection of plots within the Bussia cru, meaning it is not sourced from a single specific vineyard like the Cicala, Colonnello, or Romirasco labels, but rather from a broader selection of the region.

The 1994 vintage in Barolo is generally considered good but not legendary: balanced wines, less extreme than great vintages such as 1990 or 1996, with a more classic and linear style. In this context, the 1994 Bussia is now typically in an advanced stage of development but still approachable, with an aromatic profile leaning toward dried rose, ripe cherry, licorice, tobacco, leather, and earthy and spicy notes. The fruit component is now more subtle, while the tertiary nuances typical of mature Nebbiolo emerge more prominently.

On the palate, this Barolo is generally medium-bodied, with a structure that remains firm but is less imposing than that of the winery’s most prestigious crus. The tannins are present but have been softened by time, and the acidity typical of Nebbiolo helps maintain a certain tension and freshness even after many years. It lacks the vertical depth of Aldo Conterno’s most iconic crus, but retains a understated elegance and good, mature drinkability.

At the table, this wine is very much in keeping with Piedmontese tradition: it pairs well with braised meats, roast beef, stewed game such as hare or roe deer, tajarin with meat sauce, and agnolotti del plin with rich sauces. It also works well with aged cheeses and dishes featuring porcini mushrooms, where its earthy and spicy notes find a good balance.

Overall, this is a more “classic and approachable” Barolo within the Aldo Conterno range; today, it is particularly noteworthy for its harmonious development and its traditional expression of the Bussia terroir in a consistent vintage like 1994.
