La denominazione Pessac-Léognan si sviluppa lungo la riva sinistra della Garonna, appena sotto Bordeaux (alcuni vigneti si trovano già nel territorio comunale). È caratterizzata da terreni alluvionali di graves e da un clima oceanico temperato, con un’alta umidità e temperature relativamente miti per tutto l’anno. 

Esattamente come nell’Haut-Médoc, che presenta un terreno simile, il vitigno principale è il cabernet sauvignon, spesso assemblato con il merlot o, in quantità più limitate, con altri vitigni come il petit verdot, il malbec e il carménère. I Pessac-Léognan sono vini più leggeri e dagli aromi più intensi rispetto ai vicini dell’Haut-Médoc, con una palette aromatica dove spiccano i frutti a bacca nera e rossa (ribes nero, amarene, prugne e more), accompagnati dalle tipiche note erbacee. 

Nelle migliori annate, la struttura tannica corposa e ben integrata permette ai vini di invecchiare anche diversi decenni prima di raggiungere tutto il loro potenziale.
