The “Titolo” is produced on the slopes of the extinct volcano Monte Vulture, in the hamlet of Solagna del Titolo (municipality of Barile, PZ) at an altitude of about 600 m. The volcanic soil—rich in lava, lapilli, ash, and layers of clay (“pozzolana”)—gives the wine a distinct and mineral character. The vineyards are very old (45–65 years and older) and are carefully tended. Winemaking involves hand-harvesting, fermentation in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperatures, malolactic fermentation, and aging in barriques and in the bottle. In the glass, it displays an intense ruby red color with garnet-red reflections (as it ages). On the nose, there are ripe black and red fruits (cherry, blackberry), spicy and smoky notes, Mediterranean herbs, and tobacco. There are hints of volcanic rock and ash. On the palate, it is full-bodied and structured, with pronounced yet well-integrated tannins and good acidity that keeps it lively; the minerality of the soil is perceptible and in harmony with the fruit and spice. The finish is long and lingering, with hints of plum, aromatic herbs, sweet spices, and a slight toasty note.
It is a wine with great aging potential that will develop further complexity after years in the bottle.
