Barolo, which is made primarily from the Nebbiolo grape, can be considered one of Italy’s greatest wines. The vineyards, situated on a hillside, are planted in soil composed of calcareous marl, magnesium, and manganese in the northwest, and iron in the southeast. Two styles of Barolo can be found in the same region. On the one hand, there are the modern Barolos—fruity, smooth, and with tannins that have matured through aging in new barrels; on the other hand, there are the classic Barolos—dense, tannic, and often dried with delayed bottling. In general, Barolos are characterized by their very dark color and remarkable aromatic complexity. These refined and elegant wines are distinguished by smoky notes of creamy vanilla and tobacco.
