The 2020 Barolo from Marchesi di Barolo is a structured and elegant red wine made exclusively from Nebbiolo grapes grown on the Langhe hills, representing a classic and approachable style of the appellation. In the glass, it displays a brilliant garnet-red color that will develop orange hues over time. The nose offers a broad and typical profile with notes of dried roses, small red fruits, spices, tobacco, and subtle hints of balsamic and tar. On the palate, it is well-balanced with good structure, supported by pronounced yet quite soft tannins and a freshness that makes the wine harmonious and smooth to drink. The finish is lingering, with spicy and floral notes returning. The 2020 vintage has produced well-balanced wines that are less austere than more robust vintages and are therefore enjoyable even when relatively young. It is recommended to serve it at about 16–18 degrees with a light aeration. I ordered three bottles: a 1999 French wine that I opened recently—it was a huge hit.
The other two were a Barolo Serralunga d’Alba from Fontanafredda and a Nebbiolo d’Alba Riccheri from Marchesi di Barolo, both from 2015. I haven’t opened them yet, but they look very promising.
Shipping and packaging were equally excellent; the Marchesi di Barolo bottle was longer and stuck out, but I managed to protect it anyway.
