The 1970 Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru from Domaine Faiveley is a rare historical testament to one of the most demanding and refined terroirs of the Côte de Nuits, from a vintage that was generous and well-structured in Burgundy. Located right next to Chambertin, this Grand Cru is known for producing wines that are more subtle and mineral-driven than those of its more muscular neighbor, and Faiveley’s 1970 vintage reflects the traditional and solid style that has made the domaine famous. After more than fifty years, the wine presents a light garnet red color with orange highlights and offers a developed and aristocratic nose dominated by notes of humus, dry leaves, cigar box, old leather, and a subtle hint of red fruit jam. On the palate, the originally firm structure has transformed into an ethereal and delicate texture, where the tannins are now merely a silky memory and the finish is characterized by a lingering mineral salinity. Although 1970 is not considered a vintage suited for very long aging—unlike 1971 or 1978—aging in Faiveley’s cellars has allowed many of these bottles to survive to this day with a rare dignity and charm. It should be handled with the utmost care: It is recommended not to decant it—to avoid a devastating oxidative shock—but rather to open and serve it directly at 17 °C in large glasses, paired with delicate, autumnal dishes such as mushroom risotto or quail, to celebrate the culmination of its long evolution.
