Bersano’s Barbera d’Asti is a rare example of Piedmontese winemaking from the 1970s, produced by one of the historic wineries in Nizza Monferrato, founded in 1907 and long associated with the great wines of Monferrato.
After more than fifty years of aging, if stored properly, it displays a pale garnet color with orange highlights. The bouquet is extremely developed and complex, with aromas of red fruit preserved in alcohol, cherry jam, prunes, leather, tobacco, forest floor, dried mushrooms, sweet spices, cocoa, and light balsamic notes. On the palate, it offers a structure that is now delicate yet still harmonious, supported by the typical acidity of Barbera, which, in the best bottles, helps maintain its freshness. The finish is elegant, with hints of spices, dried fruit, and mature tertiary notes. Barbera d’Asti wines are known for their longevity and potential for further development when they come from high-quality vintages and are well-preserved.
It pairs very well with braised meats, roast veal, Piedmontese mixed boiled meats, agnolotti del plin, porcini mushroom risotto, roast rabbit, guinea fowl, aged cheeses, and Piedmontese tome cheeses. For a bottle of this age, dishes with elegant, not overly bold flavors are recommended, as they will best highlight the wine’s refined complexity.
A wine of great historical and collectible interest, it now represents, above all, an emotional and cultural experience. Its current quality depends largely on the storage conditions of each individual bottle; after more than fifty years, each bottle may express itself differently.
