The history of Pape-Clément dates back to the 13th century, when Bertrand de Goth, then Archbishop of Bordeaux, received these lands as a gift. Elected Pope in 1306, he took the name Clement V and renamed his estate “Pape Clément,” before bequeathing it to the clergy of Bordeaux, who would continue to produce wine there for their own consumption. After the French Revolution, the estate passed through the hands of a long succession of owners, which seemed to lead it slowly into decline; this was compounded by an unfortunate hailstorm in 1937 that nearly put an end to its legendary status once and for all. Fortunately, the land was purchased in 1939 by agricultural engineer Paul Montagne, who spearheaded the estate’s revival by replanting the vineyards and renovating the cellars, before passing it on to his son Léo. Starting in 1953, successful vintages began to flourish once again, but once more, beginning in 1975, a lack of investment compromised quality for about a decade. It was Bernard Magrez—a prominent figure in Bordeaux—who became a co-owner of the estate in 1985, marking the definitive return to high-quality production, a trend now solidified by the talent of the renowned winemaking consultant Michel Rolland. Rolland employs plot-by-plot vinification, which ensures the wine’s complexity and refinement: grapes from the various plots are vinified in separate vats to allow them to fully express their unique characteristics before blending.
