La Serena’s 1999 Brunello di Montalcino is a red wine made from 100% Sangiovese Grosso grapes that embodies the traditional and terroir-driven style of Montalcino, which is currently in its prime. In the glass, it displays a deep garnet color with distinct orange hues, typical of long bottle aging. On the nose, it is broad and complex, with tertiary aromas of cherries in alcohol, dried plums, dried roses, leather, tobacco, sweet spices, licorice, and underbrush, as well as earthy and balsamic notes that develop with exposure to oxygen. On the palate, it is harmonious and mature, with silky, perfectly integrated tannins, a structure that remains present yet has been smoothed by time, and a residual freshness that keeps the wine lively and elegant. The finish is long, persistent, and very complex, with hints of ripe fruit, spices, and ethereal notes. The 1999 vintage in Montalcino is considered very good, producing balanced and long-lived wines that can develop with great elegance over time. It is recommended to serve it at around 18 degrees Celsius with the utmost care and, if desired, a brief aeration to release the aromas. It pairs well with rich but not overly assertive dishes such as braised meats, game, large roasts, and aged cheeses, or can be enjoyed on its own as a meditation wine, making it, overall, a mature, elegant, complex, and deeply expressive Brunello from the Montalcino region.
