Château des Rochers is a fairly typical winery on Bordeaux’s Right Bank: a small, family-run estate in the Lussac-Saint-Émilion region, one of the so-called “satellite” appellations of Saint-Émilion.
This is a vineyard covering approximately 7 hectares on clay-limestone soils that are particularly well-suited to Merlot. Merlot makes up about 90% of the blend, complemented by small amounts of Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, with vines that are generally quite old (around 40 years), which contributes to the wine’s concentration.
The estate belongs to Vignobles Rousseau, a family of winemakers that has been active in the Libourne region for several generations. Today it is run by Laurent and Stéphanie Rousseau, who represent roughly the fifth generation. Since the 1980s, they have transformed the originally mixed-use agricultural enterprise (involving livestock and grain farming) into a business focused almost exclusively on viticulture by gradually expanding the vineyards.
Overall, Château des Rochers is not a “renowned” château or one classified among the great names of Saint-Émilion, but it is a good representative of the appellation’s serious, regional producers, who are capable of produce decent, balanced, and sometimes even age-worthy wines, especially in good vintages, offering generally good value for money and a style that remains true to the soft and fruity character of typical Bordeaux wines with a predominantly Merlot blend.
