The history of Pape-Clément dates back to the 13th century, when Bertrand de Goth, then Archbishop of Bordeaux, received these lands as a gift. Elected pope in 1306, he took the name Clement V and named his estate “Pape Clément” before bequeathing it to the clergy of Bordeaux, who were to maintain production for their own consumption. After the French Revolution, the estate had a long list of owners, which seemed to slowly lead it into decline; added to this was an unfortunate hailstorm in 1937 that threatened to put an end to its legacy once and for all. Fortunately, the estate was acquired in 1939 by the agronomist Paul Montagne, who initiated the estate’s revival by replanting the vineyards and renovating the cellars before handing it over to his son Léo. Starting in 1953, successful vintages began to flourish again, but from 1975 onward, a lack of investment once more compromised quality for about a decade. It was the arrival of Bernard Magrez, a prominent figure from Bordeaux, as a co-owner of the company in 1985 that marked the definitive return to high-quality production—a resurgence now consolidated by the talent of the renowned oenology consultant Michel Rolland. He employs plot-by-plot vinification, a guarantee of the wine’s complexity and refinement: the grapes from the various plots are vinified in separate tanks so that they can fully develop their specific characteristics before being blended into a single wine.
