Frescobaldi’s 1979 Montesodi is a historic red wine made from 100% Sangiovese grapes grown in the Montesodi vineyard in the Rufina region, one of the most elegant and long-aging expressions of Chianti Rufina. It is now at the peak of its maturity and presents itself in the glass with a deep garnet-red color, featuring distinct orange highlights and brick-red hues typical of a wine over forty years old. On the nose, it is extremely complex and displays tertiary aromas, with scents of dried rose, dried violets, cherries preserved in alcohol, dried plums, tobacco, leather, sweet spices, damp earth, undergrowth, and very pronounced balsamic and iron-like notes. On the palate, it is silky and harmonious, with fully developed and soft tannins, a structure perfectly integrated by age, and a surprising residual freshness that still supports the mouthfeel, making it lively and refined. The finish is long, ethereal, and very multi-layered, with spicy and floral notes returning. The 1979 vintage in Tuscany was well-balanced and allowed the highest-quality wines to develop beautifully over a long period. It is recommended to serve it at about 18 degrees with great care, avoiding excessive oxidation so as not to lose the most volatile aromas. It pairs best with delicate yet flavorful dishes such as braised white meats, light roasts, lightly seasoned fine game, and aged cheeses, or it can be enjoyed on its own as a meditation wine. Overall, it is a historic, elegant, deeply developed wine of great aromatic charm, rooted in the tradition of Sangiovese.
