Alongside Ornellaia, Sassicaia was one of the first Super Tuscans to see the light of day—a category of great wines made primarily from French grape varieties but produced in a manner quite different from standardized production. This style, which took hold in the late 1960s, marked the emergence of a new generation of great Italian wines. In fact, the history of Sassicaia dates back even further. In the mid-1940s, Marquis Mario Incisa della Rochetta, owner of Tenuta San Guido, decided to import French grape varieties (Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon) from Château Lafite-Rothschild. Originally intended solely for the owner’s personal consumption, Sassicaia was not marketed by Antinori until the 1968 vintage and quickly established itself as one of the finest Cabernet wines, capable of competing with the greatest Bordeaux wines. Encouraged by this success, many other Tuscan producers began introducing numerous French grape varieties. Faced with this sudden competition, only rigor and winemaking expertise could make the difference—a challenge that the Incisa della Rochetta family effortlessly embraced, consistently maintaining their production at the highest level of quality. In 1983, the Bolgheri appellation was classified as a DOC (Denominazione di Origine Controllata), granting this famous wine yet another—albeit superfluous—recognition in the eyes of wine lovers.
