The Bordeaux region is the area that, more than any other, has made French wines famous worldwide. This success is the result of centuries of tradition and a quest for quality. Bordeaux's fame is primarily due to its red wines, which account for 80% of production, with their impressive structure and power, but also to its botrytized or mildewed wines. The famous and expensive Bordeaux wines actually constitute a tiny percentage of total production, while most of the wines produced in the region (700 million bottles annually) are simply good, often very affordable.

Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot are the three main grapes used to produce Bordeaux red wines. This blend, known as the "Bordeaux Blend," is now present in many wines produced around the world.
