    From above, Piedmont looks like a soft, checkered quilt draped elegantly over the Alps, whose covered peaks form gentle, striated slopes. As we zoom in, we realize that each check is a vineyard and the striations are rows of vines. Each row consists of vines, leaves, shoots, and clusters, which in turn are made up of grapes—pearls of a treasure that will one day become Piedmontese wines.

    Piedmont is the treasure chest that holds these gems.

    Rightly considered one of Italy’s most prolific wine-producing regions, it is undoubtedly the most significant in terms of numbers, boasting 42 DOC and 16 DOCG wines—both red and white—a true highlight of the Italian wine scene. Just consider the recent establishment of the “Strada Reale dei vini torinesi” (Royal Route of Turin Wines), a 600-kilometer route through the capital’s territory that traverses much of the Canavese, the Turin Hills, the Pinerolo area, and the Susa Valley. Spumante also originated in Piedmont, the most famous of which (and not just in Italy) is certainly that of Asti.
