Tuscany is undoubtedly one of Italy’s most important wine-producing regions, thanks to its world-renowned wines. It is a true gem of the global wine world, offering an extraordinary variety of wines with distinct characteristics and a history stretching back thousands of years.

The typical Tuscan landscape speaks for itself when it comes to the region’s strong winemaking tradition: kilometers upon kilometers of beautiful vineyards stretching across the hills of Chianti and the Etruscan Coast, or nestled amid the postcard-perfect scenery of the Val d’Orcia and the Val di Chiana.

This includes a total of eleven Denominazioni di Origine Controllata e Garantita (DOCG), forty-one Denominazioni di Origine Controllata (DOC), and six Indicazioni Geografiche Tipiche (IGT).

One cannot discuss Tuscan winemaking—or indeed winemaking anywhere in the world—without thinking of Brunello di Montalcino, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, Chianti Classico, and the Super Tuscans produced in the Bolgheri region.

The undisputed heart and soul of the region’s red wines is Sangiovese, which is found in nearly all DOCs. It is a red grape of exceptional quality and character, though it is not easy to grow, and yields very different results depending on the microclimate and soil where it is cultivated.
