Often regarded as the counterpart to Bordeaux’s premier crus classés, the grand vin of Léoville Las Cases is the most prestigious wine of the Saint-Julien AOC. Moreover, this vineyard has a truly unique history. In 1638, a Bordeaux wine merchant named Moytiè purchased several plots of land located south of the famous Château Latour but within the commune of Saint-Julien. A century later, one of the Bordeaux merchant’s descendants inherited this vineyard and subsequently renamed it Leoville, in honor of her husband, who was the lord of a small commune called Leoville. Later, one of their descendants, the Marquis de Lascases, added his title to the vineyard’s name. After the French Revolution, this vast domaine was divided into three parts: one half became Leoville Las Cases, another quarter became Leoville Barton, and the final quarter became Leoville Poyferrè.
