Accanto a Ornellaia, Sassicaia, è stato uno dei primi supertuscan a vedere la luce, una tipologia di grandi vini ottenuti da vitigni per la maggior parte francesi, ma realizzati in modo molto diverso rispetto a una produzione standardizzata. Questo stile, che si è affermato alla fine degli anni ’60, ha segnato l'avvento di una nuova generazione di grandi vini italiani. In realtà, la storia del vino Sassicaia è ancora più antica. Dalla metà degli anni '40, il marchese Mario Incisa della Rochetta, proprietario della Tenuta San Guido, decise di importare vitigni francesi (cabernet franc e cabernet sauvignon) con barbatelle originarie di Château Lafite-Rothschild. Inizialmente destinato al consumo esclusivo del proprietario, il vino Sassicaia venne commercializzato solo dall'annata 1968 da Antinori e si affermò ben presto come uno dei migliori vini realizzato con cabernet, in grado di competere con i più grandi Bordeaux. Spinti da questo successo, molti altri produttori toscani iniziarono a introdurre molti vitigni francesi. Con questa improvvisa concorrenza, solo il rigore e la maestria enologica potevano fare la differenza, una sfida che la famiglia Incisa della Rochetta non ha avuto difficoltà a raccogliere, mantenendo immancabilmente la propria produzione ai vertici della qualità. Nel 1983 la denominazione Bolgheri è stata classificata DOC (Denominazione di Origine Controllata), conferendo al celebre vino un ulteriore, seppur superfluo, credito agli occhi degli appassionat
