Il vigneto Vega Sicilia, piantato su terreni prevalentemente calcarei simili a quelli della Borgogna, è noto per produrre uno dei più grandi vini al mondo. Il nome, contrariamente a quanto si potrebbe pensare, non ha alcun legame con la Sicilia, ma deriva dalla famiglia Santos Sicilia, precedenti proprietari del vigneto, e dal termine spagnolo "Vega", che significa "valle". Su una proprietà di 1000 ettari, situata a un'altitudine di 700 metri sopra il fiume Duero, 210 ettari sono dedicati alla vite. I vitigni bordolesi (cabernet sauvignon, merlot e malbec) occupano il 20%, mentre il tempranillo è tornato a essere dominante con l’80%. Il clima è continentale, con un'influenza atlantica. La particolarità di Vega Sicilia risiede nel suo processo di invecchiamento unico e spesso controverso. I vini maturano inizialmente in grandi botti di rovere per un anno, per poi essere trasferiti in botti di diverse dimensioni ed età. Il periodo di affinamento, che varia dai cinque ai dieci anni, ammorbidisce il carattere potente del vino. Alcune vecchie annate hanno subito invecchiamenti di oltre 25 anni in botti, ma oggi la proprietà adotta un metodo più classico, limitato a una decina d’anni.
