Marchesi di Barolo’s Barbera is a testament to Piedmontese viticulture in the 1970s and to the time-honored tradition of this historic Langhe winery. After more than fifty years of aging, when stored under optimal conditions, it displays a soft garnet color with orange highlights. The bouquet is highly evolved and complex, with notes of cherries preserved in alcohol, prunes, red fruit jam, leather, tobacco, cocoa, forest floor, dried mushrooms, sweet spices, and subtle balsamic notes. On the palate, it displays a structure that is now delicate yet still harmonious, supported by the typical acidity of Barbera, which helps maintain its liveliness and freshness even after decades. The finish is elegant and persistent, with hints of dried fruit, spices, licorice, and mature tertiary notes.

It pairs perfectly with agnolotti del plin, tajarin with ragù, braised beef, Piedmontese mixed boiled meats, roast rabbit, guinea fowl, risotto with porcini mushrooms, roast veal, aged cheeses, and Piedmontese tome cheeses. For a bottle of this age, elegant dishes that aren’t overly spicy are preferable, as they will best highlight the wine’s finesse and evolving complexity.
