The history of Pape-Clément dates back to the 13th century, when Bertrand de Goth, then Archbishop of Bordeaux, received these lands as a gift. Elected Pope in 1306, he took the name Clement V and renamed his property "Pape Clément" before bequeathing it to the Bordeaux clergy, who preserved its production for their own consumption. After the French Revolution, the estate underwent a long succession of owners, which seemed to lead to its slow decline. An unfortunate hailstorm in 1937 almost ended its legend. Fortunately, the lands were purchased in 1939 by agricultural engineer Paul Montagne, who brought the estate back to life, replanting the vines and renovating the cellars, before leaving it to his son Léo. From 1953 onwards, successful vintages began to flourish, but once again, starting in 1975, a lack of investment compromised quality for a decade. It was the entry of Bernard Magrez, a prominent Bordeaux figure, into the estate in 1985, which marked the definitive return to high-quality production. This growth has now been consolidated by the talent of renowned consultant winemaker Michel Rolland. Rolland uses parcel-by-parcel vinification, a guarantee of the wine's complexity and refinement: the grapes from the different parcels are vinified in separate vats to allow them to fully express their specific characteristics before blending.
