Gravner’s Rosso Rujno is one of the Friulian producer’s rarest and most distinctive red wines, an exceptional cuvée produced only in the best vintages and in extremely limited quantities. It is a wine based on a blend of Merlot with a small percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon, sourced from old vineyards on the border between Friuli and Slovenia, and represents the most “classic” and, at the same time, extreme expression of Gravner’s philosophy as applied to red wine.
The winemaking process follows a radical approach: long maceration on the skins, spontaneous fermentation, and an extremely long aging period—first in large oak barrels and then in the bottle for many years before release. The result is a wine with great structure, high concentration, and an almost meditative character.
In the glass, it displays a deep, impenetrable color and a complex aromatic profile that combines ripe black fruit, spices, tobacco, damp earth, and aromatic herbs. As it opens up, more tertiary notes emerge, such as leather, undergrowth, and balsamic undertones. On the palate, it is powerful but not rough, with substantial yet generally well-integrated tannins and a freshness that supports the wine’s alcohol content and density.
At the table, it’s a red wine for substantial, complex dishes. It pairs well with game such as venison or wild boar, slow-braised, flavorful stews, roast beef, oven-roasted lamb, and rich dishes featuring porcini mushrooms. It also works very well with aged, flavorful cheeses, such as mature pecorino or intense blue cheeses, because it has enough body and complexity to stand up to very concentrated flavors.
In general, it is a wine for contemplative dining, designed more for deep, complex dishes than for light pairings, and it fully reflects the Gravner style: intensity, time, and structure as the central elements of the experience.
