Marchesi Antinori’s Solaia is one of the most famous and prestigious Super Tuscans in the world, a red wine with Typical Geographical Indication (IGT Toscana) status produced from the iconic vineyard of the same name—covering approximately twenty hectares and facing southwest—within the Tignanello Estate in the heart of Chianti Classico. This vintage benefited from a consistent and warm growing season that allowed the grapes to ripen perfectly, giving the wine an imposing structure, extraordinary richness of flavor, and a perfect balance between power and elegance. The blend consists of 75 percent Cabernet Sauvignon, 20 percent Sangiovese, and 5 percent Cabernet Franc, all vinified separately and aged in new French oak barriques before final blending. Visually, it presents an impenetrable, deep ruby red color enriched by very subtle garnet reflections resulting from its noble aging over time. On the nose, the aroma is broad and enveloping, with warm notes of ripe black cherry, plum, and cassis that blend with hints of dark chocolate, licorice, sweet tobacco, menthol, and Mediterranean scrub herbs. On the palate, the wine is seductive, robust, and incredibly dense, with thick yet silky-smooth tannins that lead to an exceptionally long finish, enhanced by hints of dark spices and graphite. This Tuscan masterpiece pairs perfectly with complex dishes featuring red meat and fine game, such as beef tenderloin with black truffles, roe deer saddle with blueberries, braised wild boar, or duck breast with orange. It also pairs magnificently with opulent pasta dishes such as pappardelle with hare sauce and with very long-aged cow’s or sheep’s milk cheeses such as extra-aged Tuscan Pecorino DOP. For optimal enjoyment, it is recommended to serve the wine at a temperature of sixteen or eighteen degrees, uncorking the bottle at least two hours in advance to allow the complex tertiary aromas to fully develop in the glass.
